Solar energy: Utility power plant and distributed solar power generation – Total

Combating climate change is an integral part of both our long-term growth strategy and our ambition to get to net-zero emissions for all our businesses by 2050, together with society. To ensure success and meet the growing demand for electricity, we are strengthening our expertise in renewable energies, especially in solar energy, given its many advantages. Clean and abundant by definition, solar energy is also flexible, efficient and competitive.

Asserting our expertise in operating solar farms

TotalEnergies continues to expand across the entire renewable energy value chain based on an integrated approach. We design and finance photovoltaic solar plants, and build and operate them as well. In a four-year time span, our renewable power generation capacity increased by more than tenfold, from 0.7 GW in 2017 to 10 GW in 2021. The growth was led by an acceleration in renewable energy projects in 2020, including over 2,000 megawatts of solar assets in operation in India, more than 5,000 megawatts of solar projects in Spain and an 800-megawatt solar farm in Qatar.

TotalEnergies and Adani, a promising partnership in India

In 2020, TotalEnergies and Adani Green Energy Limited (AGEL), Adani Group’s renewable energy subsidiary, created a joint venture comprised of 2.3 gigawatts of solar projects in operation, spread over 12 Indian states. With this agreement, TotalEnergies is helping India to achieve its energy transition. In January 2021, the Company also announced the acquisition of a 20% interest in AGEL.

Developing distributed solar power generation

Among solar’s many advantages is the ability to distribute power generation to as close to consumers as possible. We are supporting this paradigm shift by developing distributed photovoltaic solutions, including rooftop systems for residential, industrial and commercial buildings as well as solar carports. Our SunPower affiliate, for example, is today one of the leading distributed generation companies in the United States, in both the commercial and residential segments. We also install these systems at our own sites. With nearly 2,700 of our service stations equipped with solar panels at end 2021 (target: 5,000), this program has enabled us to develop expertise that can be useful for customers wishing to adopt a multi-site approach in one or more countries.

The Zeeland refinery’s moment in the sun

Located in the Netherlands near the city of Middelburg, the Zeeland refinery is 55%-owned by TotalEnergies. To shrink the site’s carbon footprint and reduce its energy bill, we built a solar plant comprising 28,000 photovoltaic panels on an 11.5-hectare land parcel. The 12 megawatts of electricity generated are directly consumed by the refinery.
